Beauty Forgotten

I created Beauty Forgotten to signify advertising. Magazines create images of women as satisfied and cheerful. I believe advertising creates a world that does not exist. The advertising world has an effect on women who base their self-esteem on their appearance--their shape, clothing and skin. Advertising uses women as a tool to attract them into improving their appearance, which creates a fake identity. Beauty Forgotten stops exposing women to advertising by ripping ads out of magazines. Women are not allowed to look at the ads anymore and it stops women from feeling negative about the way they look.

  1. First of all, I loved the sound. That visceral tearing, ripping noise repeated over and over was amazing. You could make an audio track of just those sounds and it could be its own work. The video itself was a very powerful statement about standards of beauty and the tie-ins with self-esteem and commercialism. Would it be possible to narrow your "rip choices" down a bit? Like maybe only tear out ads featuring impossibly beautiful women rather than articles? I'm sure it was very difficult to determine which images to rip out and which to keep.

  2. I think this the most emotional video to watch, probably because I'm a woman and I have worked with a lot of young girls who have struggled with the media's idea of beauty, which led them to have various body image problems and in some cases eating disorders. This would be a fantastic video to show to highlight the negative effects of the media, and this is a great reaction to that negative media. You should really consider getting this video out into the public sphere (moreso than it is) and getting people to watch it. Its message is very strong and I think people need to see this.

  3. This video has great impact. The visuals mixed with the sound is great! I also believe this video would create great debate among viewers on the views portrayed which I think adds to its success.

  4. I like this video because you can definitely feel the anger in the way you are tearing the pages out of the magazine. The message you give is quite clear and that's great. The part I liked the most was when you sped the video up and tore 5 pages or so very quickly. You should have done that maybe a couple more times. Overall the video got the message across in a great way. Great job.

  5. The infamous video that spawned that contraversial topic! I loved it! The passion you had conveyed in the sense of "speaking out" was amazing. No words. No music. Just raw emotions and a message. Great.

Of course my views on WHY people feel the need to lash out against magazinal portrayal of beauty is the complete opposite of what this peice is stating. The beauty they create is meant to be observed and moved on from. The only reason this kind of passion becomes an issue is because it makes someone feel low self esteem. Even models want to be what magazines are, but that was never the intent. The artists were trying to sell not to change.
