Learning by touch

Artist Statement
I wanted to add another piece to my collection similiar to my Hand Obstructions piece.  In this, I applied the loop theory, using the same shots over and over again to show the repetiveness of touching used in the process of learning.
In this piece, I wanted to convey the idea of one of the important jobs of the hands, touching.  Not only as humans do we use our hands to feel (textures, hot, cold, ect.) touching objects usually convey sound as well.  This is the learning process that I wanted to convey in this piece.

  1. After watching this video it made me feel like I was falling and trying to hang on. Also the noises from the wall reminded me of someone scratching a chalkboard, which I can’t stand. The noises were very interesting to hear from one shot to the next. Great Job!

  2. I liked this video because it made me empathize with the hand's owner. I could imagine all the textures being explored in the film. I also loved that the camera followed the hand in 1:1 movement. The effect created was of shifted perspective, where the typically stationary background becomes moveable, and the hand becomes the anchor point.

  3. This video kind of makes you feel odd, as far as perspective and whatnot. I really loved the noise of your hand on the notebook spirals both going up and down. I liked that the audio was nothing but natural sound.

  4. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I get a sense of detachment when I watch the hand move from place to place. I feel as though I'm in those places with you and it makes me wonder what type of environment is beyond the video.

  5. I really enjoy all of the different audio effects you get from rubbing your hand on the different textures. They are all so unique. I especially enjoyed the notebook spiral and elevator squeak noises. If you added more videos of you and other textures it would have been better than seeing the same places over and over. Very good piece.

  6. I liked this piece? Except the title through me off. I like the idea of your hand running over textures, and you have pretty nails. But i didn't get the feeling of "learning by touch" more like "how many things can i feel in one day."
When i think of learning, i think of a little child running her hand along their parents face to get a better understanding of who they are, or like leggos. Or a blind person using touch to see and understand.

I felt this piece was more getting re-aquianted with things you already know what they feel like.
