Ruptured Waters

Artist Statement after the break

This video is about more than just rocks, paint, and water.  In this video, I explore the impermanence of language, especially spiritual language.  I use the medium of rocks with spiritual words written on them covered in watercolor paint and dropped in a tank water to illustrate my point.  The rocks are shown in their colors before they are dropped in to show the words and let the viewers know which word is of current importance.  When they are dropped in the water, the wet paint washes off to illustrate the washing away of the words themselves.  As more rocks and more colors are added to the water (which symbolizes the world around us), the color changes and the water becomes cloudy.  The constantly changing focus illustrates uncertainty with our faith.  In all, this video illustrates struggles within ones faith and one’s personal relationship with a higher being.
This video did not go as plan.  Ideally, the rocks would have been coated in a different type of coloring material that would be clearer in the water and make it less cloudy.  However, how the video turned out ended up being better for the intentions of my project.

  1. I really like how you brought different objects together to convey your concept. It was nice to see the rocks in the water and view the mixture of colors together. The music went very well. I really liked how you started with water and ended without it. Great Job!

  2. Lovely symbolism with the paint colored rocks, and an excellent choice going with a higher definition camera. I think if you had a tighter shot on the tank, it would be even more powerful, but overall, you did a fantastic job conveying the meaning behind this film.

  3. I'm a big fan of symbolism. I loved the idea. This video had a lot of meaning. I believe it can be interpreted many different ways and I believe that's what makes it successful.

  4. This piece is very moving. The way it was made was awesome. Your idea for the piece and how you put your emotion into it made the piece great.

  5. At first i was a little confused. But over all i think the message was somewhat clear? The strongest point being the muddy waters. I have to agree with what Eric said in class though, that i wish i didn't know it was a fish tank.
